First responders face what most people will never encounter — critical incidents, trauma, violence, death, moral injury, burnout, and the cumulative weight of carrying others through their worst moments. These experiences leave marks that are often invisible, but always real.
Protect the Protector exists to acknowledge that reality and address the human cost of service. Our mission is simple: Protect those who protect others.
We are committed to promoting the wellness, resilience, recovery, and humanity of the men and women behind the badge, the turnout gear, the medic bag, and the tactical vest. Through education, training, honest conversations, leadership, and meaningful resources, we challenge the culture of silence surrounding mental and emotional well‑being in the first‑responder community.
We believe asking for help is not weakness, seeking support is not failure, and vulnerability does not diminish strength.
We recognize the invisible burdens that accompany a life of service — sleepless nights, difficult memories, moral conflict, organizational challenges, strained relationships, burnout, and the gradual loss of purpose that can occur when people spend their lives caring for everyone else.
We will not ignore those realities. We will not minimize the cost of service. And we will not forget the person behind the protector.
Protect the Protector stands for a culture where first responders are equipped not only to face danger, but also to care for themselves, support one another, and find a path toward healing and lasting resilience.
Because protecting others should never require losing yourself.
Every first responder’s journey has breaking points, often hidden behind a badge of silence.
On July 24, 2024, while leading a fugitive apprehension, I shattered my shoulder after a slip in a suspect’s garage. But that was just the beginning. The very next day—on July 25, 2024—I found myself in a four-hour shootout, exchanging 600 rounds

The very next day—on July 25, 2024—I found myself in a four-hour shootout, exchanging 600 rounds with the suspect. That intensity was the turning point. This isn't a story about injury. It's a story about awakening. The job didn't break me, the silence did.
When the dust settled, and the silence closed in, I realized that no first responder should have to face those moments alone. And that’s why Protect the Protector was born.

Jera’s path into this mission didn’t look like Jason’s — but it led to the same place. While he was carrying the weight of the job, the injuries, the triggers, and the moments of silence that come with PTSD, she was carrying the impact of all of it at home. She faced the outbursts, the emotional rollercoaster, and the uncertainty of trying to support someone she loved through battles she couldn’t always see.
She didn’t get clear answers. She got the unknowns — the shifts in mood, the quiet moments that felt heavy, and the times when Jason stepped away because his mind was fighting something he couldn’t explain. Instead of breaking under that pressure, she learned. She educated herself, asked hard questions, and figured out how to stand steady without escalating the moment. She learned which battles were trauma, which were fear, and which weren’t battles at all.
Her resilience didn’t come from perfection — it came from patience, understanding, and the willingness to grow alongside someone who was trying to heal. And in that process, she found her own strength.
Jera’s role in Protect the Protector reflects that journey. She represents the families who walk beside responders, navigate the unknowns, and hold the line when things get complicated. Two different paths — Jason’s on the frontline, hers at home — but both leading to the same mission: making sure no responder or family has to face their mountains alone.
